Shakespeare’s Family Homes
Explore Shakespeare’s Family Homes in Stratford-upon-Avon for a truly unique journey through the life of the world-famous poet and playwright, William Shakespeare. Walk in his footsteps and discover how, four centuries on, he still influences our everyday lives.
Highlights
Visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace to walk in Shakespeare’s footsteps and explore the house where he was born and spent his childhood and early married life.
Immerse yourself in the new introductory exhibition Becoming Shakespeare. Full of imagery and his own words, it explores the beginnings of his creativity in the very surroundings where his journey began. Wander through rare artefacts, memorabilia and artwork from the world’s largest public Shakespeare museum. Hear fascinating tales of 16th-century family life, and see the workshop where his father, John, ran his prestigious trade as a glove maker with actors bringing his works to life.
Explore Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, home to Shakespeare’s bride-to-be, Anne Hathaway and generations of her family over the centuries. With acres of beautiful cottage gardens, orchards, and sculpture trails, it’s an idyllic rural retreat to explore. Treat yourselves to a cream tea in the Garden cafe overlooking the cottage.
Shakespeare’s New Place was the grand family home where Shakespeare lived for the last 19 years of his life and where he wrote some of his most famous plays. Although it was demolished over 250 years ago, the site has been transformed with contemporary sculptures celebrating his works and beautiful gardens and an exhibition celebrating the women in his life – both family and his characters. Talks tell the stories of how the house originally looked and the lives of those who lived there.
