Asian Art Museum – Overview
Visit the Asian Art Museum which focuses on art and culture from across Asia, igniting curiosity and creativity in those who visit. The collection of artwork that spans over 2,500 pieces and represents all the major cultures of Asia.
Divided into 7 regions, you will take a creative journey that goes through South Asia; the Persian World and West Asia; Southeast Asia; the Himalayas and the Tibetan Buddhist World; China; Korea; and Japan. In all you can find 6,000 years of history in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
The museum offers more than 18.000 art objects. Discover beautiful, rare masterpieces, such as the “Seated Buddha”, the maybe oldest Buddha statue in the world. The “Buddha triumphing over Mara“, showing characteristic features of images of the Buddha. Or have a look at the “Buddhist deity Simhavaktra Dakini”, reflecting cross-cultural influences. Also, learn more about their historical and cultural importance.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The subjects of those exhibitions are very diverse. The past exhibits displayed, for instance, art which was recovered from shipwrecks and paintings from the famous Chinese artist Chang Dai-chien. So there’s more to learn with every visit.
