Muncaster Castle – Overview
Visit the historic haunted Muncaster Castle with its wild woodland gardens and exhilarating bird of prey displays. This makes it perfect for a family day out in the Western Lake District!
Muncaster Castle is still a lived-in home for the Pennington family after more than 800 years. It commands fantastic views from its vantage point above the Ravenglass estuary. Legend has it that it is one of the most haunted castles in Britain. There simply are no rational explanations for the strange happenings, such as self opening doors, children’s crying, and a lady’s singing. During your visit you will hear all about the stories around what has happened during the last centuries.
Furthermore, it includes 77 acres of woodland and magnificent gardens against the backdrop of the Western Lake District fells. The Gardens offer a blend of cultivated areas, lawns and woodlands, as well as playgrounds. These idyllic surroundings provide memorable days out for visitors of all ages.
Throughout the year the Muncaster Hawk & Owl Centre is open with a wonderful selection of hawks, owls and vultures, daily flying displays and a wild heron feed (see website for full details and times). However, you cannot bring dogs to the Centre.
B&B and self-catering accommodation is available onsite in the Coachman’s Quarters, as well as a cafe, gift shop and children’s play area.
Muncaster Castle hosts a variety of family friendly events and experiences throughout the year; full details and dates are available here. For instance, treat yourself to some Afternoon Tea!
