Chelsea Physic Garden

Chelsea Physic Garden – Overview

Hidden in the heart of London, Chelsea Physic Garden is both a centre for learning and a peaceful oasis in the city.

Highlight

In 1673 the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London established the Garden. Back then, it allowed apprentices to study the medicinal qualities of plants. Later, it became one of the most important centres of plant and botany exchange in the world by the 18th century.

It is the oldest garden in London and houses around 5,000 different plants. The garden occupies 4 acres and is located at the edge of the Thames. In the beginning only established to grow medical plants, over time it had major impact all over the world.

As the second oldest botanic garden in England, the Chelsea Physic Garden is home to some of Europe’s oldest rockery, the Garden of Edible & Useful Plants, Victorian Cool Fernery, the World Woodland Garden and the Garden of Medicinal Plants. A highlight is the largest outdoor olive tree in Britain.

Find peace and tranquility in this beautifully well-kept garden and escape the the hectic rush! The park in Chelsea is worth visiting all year around. Enjoy the sun in summer, watch the leaves change their colours in autumn, get in the holiday spirit in winter, and watch the flowers bloom in spring.

Be sure to take a free guided or audio tour! Also, be sure to try out the cafe and buy yourself a souvenir at the garden’s shop!
