Florence Nightingale Museum – Overview
The Florence Nightingale Museum celebrates the life and work of the world’s most famous nurse. Located on the banks of the river Thames opposite the Houses of Parliament, the museum attracts visitors from all over the world who want to learn more about the Lady with the Lamp and her Victorian world. We also examine Florence’s legacy, her influence on nursing today and the continuing relevance of her work.
Highlights
In the Florence Nightingale Museum you will find a wealth of personal artefacts, paintings, prints, sculptures and even some of Florence Nightingale’s own writings. Celebrate the life and work of the best known figure in nursing history and learn about how she helped soldiers in the Crimean War and became known as the ‘Lady with the Lamp’.
The displays include a number of military, hospital and nursing materials connected with the Crimean War, as well as objects connected with the Nightingale School and St. Thomas Hospital. A collection of 63 letters from Florence Nightingale and a number of her books are also on display. Some of the museums most important objects are ten oil paintings by French artist Victor Tardieu, depicting a field hospital during WW1. Also you will be able to see Florence Nightingale’s pet owl, Athena.
In addition, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions, for instance about epidemics and much more! Enjoy a daily highlights tour at 15.30 to discover the story and achievements of Florence Nightingale. You can even meet Miss Nightingale every last Saturday of the month!
