As the sun goes down over the Big Apple, city lights begin to twinkle. New York looks amazing at night and the evening brings a whole new set of things to do for the avid city explorer.

There’s 24-hour entertainment from nightclubs and comedy shows, as well as family activities, all happening in the evening.

Here we’ve put together a handful of the best things to do in New York at night.

City Nightlife

If you’re looking for a young and vibrant nightlife then you need to try the Chelsea Nightclub Tour to liven up your New York nights out.

This tour begins in a glitzy lounge in the upscale area of Chelsea where you’ll meet up with your nightlife guides and fellow revellers.

You’ll get to visit the world famous Marquee nightclub and while you might not be a celebrity you will certainly be treated like one and will definitely have a night to remember.

But we know that clubbing isn’t everyone’s favourite cocktail; if nightclubs are too much for your refined tastes then perhaps you’ll like to head to one of the many Jazz clubs in New York.

Enjoy a drink and a tune at the charming Arthur’s Tavern which has been delig hting revellers for 70 years and is very popular with bohemians and tourists.

Or for more of a concert feel, head to the home of jazz; Jazz at Lincoln Centre. Whether you are dining and listening or just relaxing and taking in the show while looking over the stunning views of Central Park at night, this will be a memorable experience.

Family Tours

City touring for a beginner should start on a bus and New York’s iconic scenes come to life in a spectacle of lights on the Gray Line’s famous open double decker night tour.

Seated up on the top deck looking down on the city dwellers, take in some of Manhattan’s famous neighbourhoods and top city attractions; the vibrant Times Square, the iconic Empire State building, the very cool Greenwich Village and a glowing view of the entire NY skyline.

If you’re not familiar with all of New York’s top sites, the tour guides swiftly bring you up to date with only the most interesting bits of history. And although it’s a night tour, it’s actually something that the family can enjoy together.

But perhaps being sat on a double-decker is not your ideal way to see a new city. You may prefer sea views to those of an open-top bus and if that’s the case then board one of the many sailing boats moored along the harbour that offer a unique sightseeing experience, like the Circle Line Sightseeing or the World Yacht Dinner cruises.

Take the family for a sunset sail and get an illuminated view of Manhattan or for a more romantic experience, if it’s just the two of you, a champagne cruise!

Comedy and Laughter

Stand Up NY comedy show, a breeding ground for up-and-coming comedy talent and a career springboard for the likes of Chris Rock and others. Tucked into New York’s Upper West Side, newcomers and stars that have appeared on channels like Comedy Central, and HBO will have you laughing the night away.

Lastly, for a lighthearted evening with the kids, take them on a tour around the famous Ripley’s Believe it or Not! museum in Times Square. Open for your amusement until 1am, it’s collections showcase the weird, outlandish and unique from all over the world.

There’s a wealth of things to do in New York at night, and watching the sunset over the city skyline is just the beginning.
