Most people are aware of Sir Winston Churchill, and his role in leading Britain through the darkest days of World War 2 to eventual victory. But not so many realise that the Churchill war experience was not just one that found Winston with his cigar and brandy making wireless speeches about fighting in the fields and on the beaches, or pointing out that so much was owed by so many to so few.

The Churchill war museum London re-creates the interior of the actual bunker under Whitehall that was used by the premier and his staff, including the Joint Chiefs of the military from the Army, Navy and Air Force. Touring around it transports the visitor back in time, taking a trip down into the bowels of the earth, where a labyrinth of tunnels, lifts and excavated chambers housed the War Cabinet executive, as they planned and plotted the defence of the British Isles against the threat of Nazi invasion, and eventually the triumphal return to the Continent of the British forces that were forced to withdraw from it in 1940.  

The Britain At War Experience brilliantly recaptures the atmosphere of the time, with audio-visual displays and exhibits, including fully kitted- out operations rooms with period communications equipment, maps, charts and all the machinery of government, albeit one that was  functioning underneath the streets of the capital. As well as Churchillian speeches, visitors can listen to other wartime radio broadcasts and hear re-created sounds of the Blitz and the aftermath of bombing raids, as well as see period photographs of the devastation and experience the dust and smoke that would have been generated by an air raid.

Costumed mannequins, period food items, clothing, and all the daily grind of rationing, population evacuation from the cities to the countryside, the role of bomb disposal teams, and the emergency services, are all here at the Britain at war experience London.
