Possibly the most celebrated soldier in British history, the Duke Of Wellington, Arthur Wellesly, is best known for his defeat of Napoleon Buonaparte at the Battle Of Waterloo in 1815. After over 20 years of fighting against the French, Wellington’s compatriots were more than happy to contribute to the commemorative Wellington Arch Hyde Park, a triumphal arch in the Roman style that stands a stone’s throw from Buckingham Palace and affords inarguably the best view of its environs, including the stunning statues of the war memorial to the fallen of recent wars.

Located as it is now within a giant road junction at Hyde Park Corner, the Wellington Arch was originally, in the 19th Century, strategically placed across the road from Wellington’s London home, Apsley House, or No. 1 ,London, as it was then known. And while it was synonymous to say London Wellington at that time, since the general’s heyday, his achievements on the battlefield have been retained within the collective consciousness more so than the actual bricks and mortar embodiment of his achievements. And that’s a pity, because the London Wellington Arch is one of London’s best kept tourist secrets, having as it does a superb panorama over the city from its inconspicuous viewing platforms, as well as an impressive exhibition detailing Wellington’s feats.

In fact, the London Wellington Arch Hyde Park, which was designed some 10 years after Wellington’s greatest victory, in 1825, is chock full of fascinating displays, detailing the construction of the memorial itself, including its winding stairwells to the summit, and its role as the capital’s smallest police station. There are amazing models of some of the venerable campaigner’s major battles, paintings, period artefacts and, atop the London Wellington memorial itself, the biggest bronze sculpture in Europe, featuring an angel of peace on a chariot of war.

The London Wellington Arch is a striking and surprising historical attraction and one that the whole family will find both fascinating and fun any time of the year.
