The Globe Theater has become one of the most talked about and visited tourist sites in London since the re-creation of Shakespeare’s theatre at the end of the 20th Century.
One of several London arenas that Shakespeare’s plays were performed in during his lifetime, Shakespeare’s Globe was the best known and loved of all, being aptly dubbed ‘The O’ by the playwright himself. It’s slightly off-centre circle is now open to the heavens and acts as a fitting stage for the performance of many of the master-writer’s masterworks.
Fittingly, the Globe Theater is a thriving working arts centre, while housing the biggest Shakespeare exhibition anywhere, charting both the history of the writing genius, his family, players and his celebrated theatres, not least the nearby Rose (where visitors are taken during matinee play performances at Shakespeare’s The Globe). Of course, the focus of the displays is on Shakespeare’s theatre royal, the Globe Theatre, charting the history of the venerable edifice from its original construction in 1599 to its demise by fire in 1613, when a cannon shot that was let off during a performance of Henry VIII, struck the thatched roof and brought the curtain down for some 380 years. Even so, during its heyday at the height of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare’s Globe won international renown as the premier crucible of the arts and its reputation was such that it pervaded the centuries until its rebirth as the London Globe Theatre in the 1990s.
A ticket for Shakespeare’s Globe includes an informative and entertaining guided tour, and there are bar facilities and a café, as well as the chance to buy tickets for a show at the London Globe Theatre – and one that should not be missed! A family day out with a difference and one that will leave an indelible memory. To do or not to do, there is no question!
