Everyone knows that dinosaurs were terrifying and gigantic lizards, and the most fearsome reptiles that the world has ever known. But until someone invents their own Jurassic Park, the next best thing anywhere on the planet is Reptilium Landau, the biggest reptile zoo in the whole of Germany.
Reptilium Landau is a fascinating day out for all the family, providing visitors with a host of amazing sights within a state of the art eco-friendly facility that houses more than 1000 animals from across Asia, Africa, the Americas and Australia, most of which are of course reptiles, though there are also examples of rare scorpions, tarantulas and centipedes that live and thrive in reptilian environments and have been known do battle with them, not unlike the giants of Jurassic Park!
Germany’s biggest reptile zoo has a number of themed zones, one of which is the terrarium, featuring exotic flora and fauna in authentic country-specific rocky landscapes with sand floors. Visitors will find that as they traverse the terrarium, the atmosphere becomes ever more tropical and humid, and among the waterborne species on display in and around the 60 square meter pool are anacondas, caimans, toads, stump crocodiles, water and land tortoises, and turtles.
Visitors can get up close and personal with all the creatures in the terrarium and anyone wishing to take things a step further can sign up for a handling training course or even sponsor an animal. Additionally, the Reptilium throws children’s birthday parties and has keeper days and even overnight camps, as well as providing an outdoor playground.
The eight-metre high Desert Hall houses another authentic rocky environment with palm trees and other flora, and among the land creatures that can be spotted here are the yellow anaconda and Tiger Python snakes, which can slither up glass walls, as well as numerous types of gecko.
Hourly feeding sessions are a highlight of the day at the Reptilium Landau, and the specially-lit Night House takes visitors into the realm of the nocturnal feeders such as tree frogs, snakes and highly toxic Gila monsters. For those who have a special interest in snakes, the monthly zoo night (held on the first Thursday of the month) allows visitors access to the Reptilium till 10pm, and a guided tour from 7pm takes in a snake feeding session, which is not for the faint-hearted or weak of stomach!
The outdoor zone of the Reptilium Landau features endangered domestic animals and visitors can learn from the expert staff how the institute participates in breeding projects and nurture newcomers in the dedicated incubation and young animal-breeding station. All in all, Reptilium Landau makes for a fascinating and fun family day out at any time of the year, and one that the weather can’t put a dampener on.
