Bruges is a city known for its beautiful architecture, from its walled ramparts and gothic churches to its wonderful canal waterways and parks. But it’s also home to some of Belgium’s most intriguing museums, including institutes dedicated to the making of some of the country’s most famous exports, Belgian chocolates and fried potato chips. In addition, in something of a eureka! moment, the town created the world’s only museum dedicated to one of the ubiquitous elements in all our lives, the lightbulb! And that bright spark hit upon a great idea for a fun family day out with a difference. For Lumina Domestica takes visitors on a fascinating trip through the ages to illuminate us as to how indoor lighting came to become integral to our lives, and why interior light was so important to our evolution as a society and development as people.
Lumina Domestica shines a spotlight on the whys and wherefores of our fascination with the Sun and other astral sources of light, from the earliest times in recorded history to the present, and how we attempted to bring a little bit of that magical illumination into our home life. The
Lumina Domestica exhibits trace our primal fear of the dark and shows that humankind’s biggest advances were made when we learned to control that fear and use artificial light as a tool for progress.
Among the exhibits in the 12 themed rooms at the state of the art Lumina Domestica facility are those dealing with the basics of how man came to control fire by 400,000 BC, how lamps were first created using animal bones and oils, and how these implements were honed in incremental steps over the millennia. The story of interior lighting’s constant evolution is related within 80 display notices, along with some 6000 artefacts, 1000 of them on-show lamps (with the remainder housed in accessible library space), tracing key developments such as the artificial illumination used by ancient civilisations like the Mesopotamians and Egyptians, right up to the true Age of Enlightenment when pioneers of modern lighting like Thomas Alva Edison made key breakthroughs that led to light-bulbs as we know them today.
Since then, lighting technology has produced low-carbon, long-life lighting and the latest developments are also included in the world’s biggest lighting museum, so that you’ll be able to see where you’re going even before anyone else does!
A trip to Bruges’ Lumina Domestica is a dazzling and enlightening experience that provides a fun family day out all year round in any weather. So strike a light and head for Lumina Domestica!
