The Black Forest of northern Germany is renonwed for many things, from legends of trolls and disappearing children, to the rich gateau that is its culinary claim to global fame. But the Kamelhof Rotfelden is perhaps it’s biggest surprise, and one that will delight animal lovers of all ages. For the Kamelhof, or Camel Station, is a startling camel sanctuary set in some of the country’s most beautiful countryside.
With over 80 camels in residence, including dromedaries (one hump) and Bactrians (two humps), the emphasis is on allowing visitors to the
Kamelhof to get up close and personal with these African and Asian beasts of burden. Children are encouraged to take a hands-on approach and pet the animals, brushing their thick coats and going for a ride inside the picturesque paddocks under expert guidance and supervision.
Despite their reputation for getting the hump, camels are usually good-tempered creatures and are unlikely to give you one in the eye for upsetting them! On the contrary, the keepers at the Kamelhof will introduce visitors to their wards and see that riders can enjoy a walk through the forest in a camel-train, provided that the weather and ground conditions allow it.
Whatever the weather, though, you can see the keepers feeding the camels, including foals, using bottles. Up to a dozen are born at the Kamelhof each year, attesting to the camels’ enjoyment of the facility, and visitors can even witness births when they happen.
Additionally, Kamelhof has multimedia presentations and an exhibition that details the world of the camel, from their countries of origin, to their spread across the globe, their physiology, aspects of their character and their haulage capabilities, most famously encapsulated in movies like Lawrence Of Arabia as ‘ships of the desert’.
Various displays in the palm-tree lined exhibition space provide further information about the camels, and the expert keepers are happy to answer questions about the animals. Visitors can also sample camel milk soap and, for younger children, there’s a woodland trail taking in over 70 species of trees and a bouncy castle.
Visitors to the Kamelhof can also enjoy a picnic on the premises or even a BBQ, although camel steaks, of course, are not on the menu!
