The London Jewel Tower is one of those fascinating family tourist attractions that most people actually walk by without even knowing that it’s there, nestling as it does in the lee of the Houses Of Parliament and Westminster Abbey, just off Smith Square. But while the ancient pile may look merely like an oddly isolated castle or church tower, the Jewel Tower London actually boasts a proud and fascinating heritage, as well as possessing a hidden gem of an interior. Standing in what was once a medieval moat and quay, architecturally, the London Jewel Tower mimics features of the Tower Of London, which was added to over the centuries from its inception in 1066 by numerous monarchs and stewards.
The King’s Privy Wardrobe, as the Jewel Tower Westminster was originally known, was constructed around 1365, as a repository for the treasury of King Edward III, and the Jewel Tower London boasts a ribbed vault that was state of the art at the time and has stood its many tests, from revolts and Civil Wars to the latterday Blitz. The edifice of the Jewel Tower Westminster was part of a vastly larger Palace Of Westminster that straddled the site, covering both sides of the road that now splits it from the subsequently-built gothic Victorian Houses Of Parliament, which replaced the original building after it was reduced to ashes in the great fire of 1834. The 14th-century tower survived that disaster (uniquely, along with the Banqueting House in Whitehall),and today houses the Parliament Past And Present exhibition the recounts the storied history of the two debating chambers, as well as some fascinating displays about the structure itself.
