We may love our fish and chips in Britain, and feel a little bit peeved that the French claim chips as their own – ‘french fries’. But think how the Belgians must feel, when ‘french fries’ are in fact Belgian ones! For it is Belgium that is truly the land of the chip, as the world’s only museum dedicated to potato fries, the Frietmuseum in Bruges, reveals.

Bruges is known for its idyllic canals and medieval architecture, as well as its central role in the production of world-famous Belgian chocolates. But of all the attractions in Bruges, one of those that is often overlooked but should be near the top of the list for lovers of fish and chips is the Bruges Frietmuseum.

Indeed, while the humble potato originated in the New World and was brought back to Europe in the 16th century by explorers and traders like Sir Francis Drake, it was the Low Countries that converted them from a hand-warmer into a winter warmer that you could actually fry and eat!

Not many days out in Bruges are as informative as its Frietmuseum, located in the historic Saaihalle, itself one of the city’s architectural gems, where the reasons behind this Belgian breakthrough in culinary practice are detailed, along with the secrets behind the cooking of the perfect potato fry.

On the ground floor of the Frietmuseum are displays detailing how potatoes were first cultivated in the mountainous regions of Peru over 10,000 years ago. The first floor exhibits then reveal how the starchy staple was transported to Belgium and came to be a part of the national diet.

Finally, the Frietmuseum is one of the few attractions in Bruges where you can actually taste the contents of its exhibits! Add some condiments in the medieval cellars and toast the greatest Belgian invention of all – the potato fry. All hail the chip!

The Bruges Het Frietmuseum (Chip Museum) is open every day, 10 am to 5 pm.
