More than three out of four people love the taste of chocolate and cocoa has been one of the world’s favourite indulgences for centuries. We now know from medical science that a little bit of chocolate each day is actually good for us. But do we know where chocolate first came from? And how did it come to be the most indulged treat in the world? What’s more, how did chocolate take over the world during the 19th Century, and what makes world-beating chocolate today?
All these questions and many others can be answered by visiting the Chocolate Museum Bruges, which was the brainchild of the Van Belle family and is sponsored by Belcolade, the last Belgian-owned maker of Belgian chocolate in a country which is renowned worldwide as among the leading chocolate-makers on the planet, with Belgian chocolate a byword for cocoa luxury. And with the words Chocolate Bruges being synonymous after centuries of chocolatiers producing edible works of art in the medieval city, the Chocolate Museum Bruges is the ideal place to get the low-down on the world’s favourite treat.
The history of chocolate from its original incarnation as a spicy drink consumed in the Olmec, Maya and Aztec empires of South America (as a change from human hearts!), is detailed in the Choco Story exhibition, which reveals the development over four millennia of chocolate production, from its Latin American roots as cocoa to its multiple forms in the 21st Century.
A series of displays at the Chocolate Museum Bruges is arraigned in three themed zones, each one of which will get your senses tingling. The first describes with the help of over 1000 period artefacts how chocolate was exported by European explorers and traders to the chocolate shops of the Continent, the precursors of today’s coffee shops, which followed in their wake.
The second distinct part of the Chocolate Bruges experience is a practical demonstration of just how chocolate as we know and love it is manufactured, from the harvesting of its raw cocoa ingredients to its modern mass production in bars, cakes, drinks and more.
Finally, visitors to the Chocolate Museum Bruges will have the opportunity to try some of the finest chocolates money can’t buy, produced on site in the museum. A must for all chocoholics and the simply curious alike!
