The Physic Garden first opened its doors to the public in 1983, but it was in fact established in 1673 by the Society of Apothecaries in order to promote the study of botany in relation to medicine. Today, it represents the second oldest botanic garden in England and holds the largest fruiting olive tree in Britain and most likely the world’s most northern outdoor grapefruit tree.
When visiting Chelsea Physic Garden, you won’t just enjoy the feel of a secret garden but you will also get to explore the Garden of World Medicine and beds of plants used for medicines by North American Indians, Maoris, Aboriginals, European and many others. During your visit you will also be able to discover the Pharmaceutical Garden as well as an incredible range of birds from dunnocks, mallard ducks to chiffchaff. This makes it a personal favourite for bird spotters and with the Grade II-listed Georgian pond rock garden, which was built using stones from the Tower of London and is today the oldest rock garden in England, you will definitely not be bored.
