The Cartoon Art Museum is the only museum in the western United States dedicated to the preservation and exhibition of cartoon art. Located in San Francisco, California, it is home to over 6000 original pieces by some of the most renowned and creative cartoonists of the 20th century.
It all started in 1984 when a group of cartoon enthusiasts started using artwork from their personal collections to organise small exhibitions, setting up shows wherever available - from local museums to rented corporate spaces. A couple of years later, the project received a much needed shot-in-the-arm through a generous endowment from Charles M. Schultz, the creator of Peanuts and a renowned figure in cartoon art. This allowed the museum to establish a permanent residence in San Francisco’s vibrant cultural district, Yerba Buena, where it remains to this day. It has since produced over 100 exhibitions and 20 publications dedicated to cartoons of all forms - animation, comic strips, comic books, graphic novels, book illustrations, editorial, magazine cartoons and underground comics. In addition to seven major exhibitions a year, the museum houses a research library, five galleries of exhibition space, a classroom for cartoon art and a bookstore. Visitors can attend book-signings and lectures, mingle and bounce ideas with professional and aspiring cartoonists, and of course, appreciate the sheer beauty and creativity of some of the finest examples of this vibrant and unique art form.
The museum’s ultimate goal is to document, exhibit, and forever preserve cartoons that have captured the hearts of millions the world over. It takes cartoon art and highlights it as a medium which not only promotes self-expression, but also communicates cultural diversity. Whether it’s nostalgic, educational or just plain fun, a trip to the Cartoon Art Museum guarantees enjoyment for the whole family, an experience you are unlikely to ever forget.
