The Golden Hinde is one of the most famous ships to ever set sail on the seven seas, and the Golden Hinde London is a perfect replica of the Sir Francis Drake ship that circuited the globe in the 16th Century on its voyages of discovery.

In fact, the Sir Francis Drake ship of the line circumnavigated the globe between 1577 and 1580, returning to Blighty with a cargo of exotic goods and tales of derring-do in the world’s most far-flung lands and oceans. Now, at the Golden Hinde London, visitors can see just what it would have been like to set sail as a Tudor sailor, leaving home-shores fare behind, and living, breathing, eating, sleeping and swabbing aboard an ocean-going open-deck wooden vessel, complete with its cramped crew quarters, keel for the hauling of, and a central mast upon which the venerable vessel’s main-sail would be hoisted to make fair progress using the trade winds that would take Sir Francis and his men to legendary lands like Cathay and the Spice Islands.

The Golden Hinde ship now rests in the peaceful St. Mary Overie Dock on Bankside, right by Old Father Thames, but clambering about its timber decks gives a fascinating insight into what it must have been like to be a member of the Tudor navy, when warships were called into action on a regular basis against the enemies of England & Wales, such as the French fleet and Spain’s impressive armadas, as well as battling brigands, pirates and privateers.

Golden Hinde London is a full-scale replica of Sir Francis Drake ship and it’s brought to life thanks to a Living History Experience in which interpreters in Tudor-style clothing expertly re-create what life on the Golden Hinde may have been like, thanks to a series of Pirate Fun and Tudor Family Days, as well as events such as Childrens’ Maritime Workshops and Tudor Evenings. As well as these bookable special events, there are also regular guided tours of the ship and stories of Tudor voyages, and a hearty yo-ho-ho welcome for one and all, me hearties!
